What is Visual Plant Medicine?

Visual Plant Medicine is a healing modality that grew from a change in my personal health circumstances and my wish to maintain and grow my developing relationship and understanding with plants in my local environment.

Plants, and the natural world around me, have been my fascination since before I can remember, since a babe in my nana’s arms, as she would walk and talk wherever we went, about the plants that grew everywhere but no-one noticed anymore. She had a name for them all, my grandad too, it must just have been how they themselves were raised, it was so natural, so obvious to them, and so it became how I experienced the world too.

What amazes me is how much I have taken this way of being with the world for granted, it wasn’t until I was much, much older that I realised I appeared to be the exception rather than the rule. This both saddened and fascinated me, it still does, how we as a society have lost this knowledge, that most people can’t tell what the wild plants and trees names are, let alone how they can help us with our day to day lives.

It was through my shamanic training and experience that I began to work with our plant allies on a whole new level, to meet the energies or ‘plant spirits’, to hear their stories, to understand what help and assistance they offer to us freely and how to work with them in this deeper way. My personal interest was always in the plants around me, the ones in the hedgerows, in wild scraps of land, untamed gardens and cracks in the pavements, these were MY allies, these plants told me who I was, where I belonged and who I shared my world with. Knowing this grounds you into pure presence and wonder like nothing else I know.

The usual way of experiencing plant medicine is through ingestion, inhalation or topically through the skin, but as it happened, as I grew older, I developed a condition that requires me to take a medication that interferes with my digestive absorbtion, so I was no longer able to interact this way with the plants, and this saddened me more than I can say. My work with The Green, my exploration and teachers had seemingly been denied me and I was bereft.

It was, as it often is, at this low point, that I was given the idea of changing the way I worked with them, using other means and skills I had, to create a new and novel means of interaction and continuing the teaching and healing relationship I had with them, through connection and art.

Through this method we can still enjoy and benefit from natural plant medicines, their healing and their wisdom, without the need to ingest or inhale them, making this safe and effective for everyone.

The process.

Visual Plant Medicine is a process that enables you to connect, on a very deep and personal level, with the plant itself. We learn how to connect with the plant directly, experience it’s energies, learn what it can offer us by way of healing or insight, and then we create a piece of artwork using the plant itself, transfering the energies, lessons and healings into the artwork, so you can continue to work with and benefit from them for years to come.

You do not require any artistic skill for this process, just a willingness to be open, explore and be guided by you plant ally.

All equipment will be provided and full, clear instruction and demonstration of technique will be given. Currently this is only offered in person, either as a 1:1 or small workshop, due to the very nature of the work involved and specialist equipment required.
